Referee Signs

Hand signal: Arm extended towards serving team
Explanation: Service. The serving team is requested to put the ball in play

Hand signal: Forearms raised front and back and twisted around the body
Explanation: Side-switch. Request to change the sides every seven points, in the final set every five points

Hand signal: Palm of one hand placed horizontally over the other hand, held in a vertical position indicating the team requesting the time out
Explanation: Timeout. Each team has the right to request one time out per set lasting 30 seconds

Hand signal: Yellow card for warning; Red card for penalty; Yellow and red card in one hand for penalty
Explanation: Penalty. As in other sports, beach volleyball also has yellow and red cards to be shown in case of disciplinary violations

Hand signal: Yellow card is held against opposite wrist
Explanation: Discipline. A yellow card can be awarded for a variety of reasons, including dissent towards the officials and time-wasting

Hand signal: Stretched arm and forefinger point down
Explanation: Ball in. The ball hits the ground on the court according to the rules

Hand signal: Both forearms in vertical position
Explanation: Ball out. The ball was hit out, so it did not touch the line

Hand signal: One hand brushed away with a horizontal motion over the fingers of the other hand held in a vertical position
Explanation: Touch. The ball was out but touched by the defending team

Hand signal: Slowly lift the forearm and hand, with bend elbow, with the palm facing upward
Explanation: Lift. Only short contact with the ball is allowed, if it is caught or held, it is a breach of the rules

Hand signal: Raise forearm vertically with two fingers extended (victory sign)
Explanation: Double touch. Players must touch the ball in one movement

Hand signal: Raise forearm vertically with four fingers extended
Explanation: Four touches. The ball has to be sent over the net to the opponents’ side by a maximum of three hits

Hand signal: According to the fault touch the net either at the top or at the side
Explanation: Net touch. The players are not allowed to touch the net

Hand signal: Hold the forearm, palm down, over the top of the net
Explanation: Over-reach. When the ball is hit beyond the net in full scope or is blocked before the third hit of the opponent

Hand signal: Upward streched forearm is bend down, palm is open
Explanation: The attack was not executed according to the rules

Hand signal: Point to center line
Explanation: Players are allowed to enter the opponents’ side under the net except if an opponent is thereby distracted

Hand signal: Arms held close together, raised thumbs of both hand
Explanation: When both teams commit a fault at the same time, the point will be replayed
